Chapter

I pace the floor for what feels like hours. I do not know what to do. I will not have my sisters drink from the body of a dead man. I doubt that will be a good idea. That blood will be as repulsive to us as the blood from an animal.
Or am I wrong? Might that be our saving grace after all? Should I go out and see if any of the dead still remain outside, untended to, unclaimed by a loved one?
Before I can leave, Aldreda sits up. âMileva.â
Instantly, I am by her side. I will not hide what I can do from them, even if that means I will be supplied with question after question that I do not wish to answer.
Much like Roul asked me questions I did not wish to answer.
But for my sisters, they will have to learn the truth eventually.
And they will learn it from my lips.
By only saving graceâif you can call it thatâis that the twins remain asleep because I will not tell one and not all three at the same time the whole truth.
âIs something wrong?â I ask.
âI⦠I feelâ¦â
âThe pain.â
âAye,â she whispers.
âDo not talk,â I urge her, but she latches onto my hand. Her grip is so very weak, and I hold hers limply so that my strength does not crush her bones.
âI had a dream,â she murmurs.
âAbout?â I ask, curious despite myself.
âSo many dead bodies out in the streets of Whiteridge. Amis lives, does he not?â
âAye.â
âWhat of Hopkin?â
âI do not know.â
âI did not see him,â she murmurs.
âDo you thinkâ¦â I hesitate. âDo you think you truly have seen what was the aftermath of the battle?â
"I do not know, but mayhap⦠has seen fit to give me this vision," she says eagerly, her eyes wide, and she seems so very childlike at that moment that it takes my breath away. She does not even appear to notice that she cannot say God's name aloud.
âI hope that is the case,â I say, and truly I do, but I have no faith this is the case. God has abandoned us, and I cannot and will not blame Him for that.
Regardless, though, we must do what we can to try to do what is right.
Rohesia sits up, and Rosa does as well. Not one of them appears to be well, and I know their time is running out.
We must do what we must, and I know what it is that we must do.
âCome,â I urge them, trying to get them to stand. They barely can, and I am so very grateful that Hopkin fixed the shoes of our horses. We can ride away.
âCome where?â Rohesia asks.
âI do not wish to go,â Rosa mumbles. âI can hardly stand.â
âDo not worry. You can sit on a horse,â I assure her. âAll will be well.â
âYou wish⦠flee?â Rohesia asks.
I nod. âWe must abandon the town.â
âWe? All of the villagers or just us?â Aldreda asks.
What a shrewd question.
âWe must leave the town to save it,â I say, not bothering to directly answer her question.
